Marie Curie Foundation Cerrig yr Afon Nursing & Residential Home
We held a Marie Curie "blooming great tea party” in September this year at Cerrig yr Afon . To prepare for the party, our Activities lady, Nikky, began by putting up posters to advertise the event in the windows of the local village shops and the village hall. Posters were placed on the pin board in the nursing home along with a collection box and invitations were placed in our reception area. A few extra ways to raise money were to guess the name of a teddy, guess how many marshmallows were in a jar and how many cups of tea could be made using the world's largest tea pot. Staff and visitors of our home were pleased to win champagne and some of the cakes. The raffles were also very successful.
Our residents took refreshments – bearing in mind some of their conditions - along with home-made ginger cake or lemon drizzle sponge cake which were made by our cooks. We had a large table full of all types of cakes for sale. Nikky baked 60 cup cakes and was very pleased when they all sold out quickly. We also sold home-made quiche lorraine and Welsh fruit cakes. There was a lovely large chocolate cake which one of our residents’ family members had made and one of our staff members bought it ready for her mother's birthday party that weekend. We also had a competition which was a picture of some cakes and biscuits which some of the residents enjoyed decorating with glitter, paint and sequins.
A few children took part in the competition and their efforts were lovely to see, and at the end of the afternoon there were very few cakes left. It was a lovely afternoon and we were pleased to raise money which will be forwarded to the Marie Curie Foundation – such a worthwhile cause and hopefully bringing some comfort to those who need it along with their families.
